The leaves crunched beneath my feet, my breath loud in the silence of the night. Above me the trees loomed ominously. I stopped, unsure of where I was, wondering whether to turn back. The hoot of an owl made me jump. Then I heard a patter. Pitter, patter. Feet, at least two pairs. The way the pitter patter stopped made me think they were following me, slowly creeping up on me. My heart hammered in my chest. I started to walk, faster and faster, the pitter, patter sped up with me. Soon I was running, the trees becoming black shadows as a grey cloud covered the moon. Sweat poured down my face, making everything around me a blur. There was something there, next to me. I stopped, frozen as something touched me. Brushed against me. I couldn’t move, I was going to have to face it, whatever it was. I turned around, trembling. It touched me again. It was soft, feathery. As I looked down I sighed as I realised it was Fluffy, my cat.
